Note: this was fine with Debian Wheezy, but with Jessie or later the cnijfilter archive will not install due to dependencies issues (depends libpng12-0 and libtiff4, also libjpeg8, but Stretch ships with libpng16-16 and libtiff5 etc).
The easiest solution that I found was to install those dep's from Jessie packages, which install fine without any hiccup. But others say its better practice to forward port these packages to your Debian release, build them from source in that release.
but the e510 URI is usb://Canon/E510%20series?serial=<number>
if I change this URI (after stopping cups) to cnij_usb:/Canon... or even cnij_usb:/dev/usb/Canon... the status monitor reports "Unknown printer"
- cups printers reports that cnij_usb backend does not exist
