Canon E510

Helps > Printers >
This printer worked first time round, it was almost too easy! (but that was Wheezy - its more tricky with later Debian releases -see below)

1. Get the drivers for printer and scangear from http://support-in.canon-asia.com...

2. Set up the printer and power it on, and connect the USB

3. Unpack the tar.gz driver archives and open a Terminal in the printer driver directory first (cnijfilter), then run

no need for the script, just enter the DEB directory and install the debian archives with

Note: this was fine with Debian Wheezy, but with Jessie or later the cnijfilter archive will not install due to dependencies issues (depends libpng12-0 and libtiff4, also libjpeg8, but Stretch ships with libpng16-16 and libtiff5 etc).

The easiest solution that I found was to install those dep's from Jessie packages, which install fine without any hiccup. But others say its better practice to forward port these packages to your Debian release, build them from source in that release.

download them from
http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libp/libpng/
http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/pool/main/t/tiff3/ http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libj/libjpeg/

cngpijmone510 is the status monitor (also shows ink levels)

I tried for hours to get the Status Monitor up with printer info, but to no avail, so I can only check print jobs etc through CUPS in a web browser.

According to the Canon documentation, one calls up the monitor with

cngpijmone510 <printer_name>

but with cngpijmone510 E510 (or plain cngpijmone510) the monitor reports "Printer not responding"

an old thread mentioned, to get it working for IP, MP series, the printer URI in the file /etc/cups/printers.conf needs editing..

from usb://dev/usb/<whatever>

to cnij_usb:/dev/usb/<whatever>

http://forums.opensuse.org/...

but the e510 URI is usb://Canon/E510%20series?serial=<number>

if I change this URI (after stopping cups) to cnij_usb:/Canon... or even cnij_usb:/dev/usb/Canon... the status monitor reports "Unknown printer"
- cups printers reports that cnij_usb backend does not exist

more info seems hard to come by on this one!
